Modern vs. Contemporary Design: What's the Difference?

34-2

The terms modern and contemporary are two of the most popular design styles today, but they're also two of the most misunderstood. While the words are often used interchangeably, they actually describe different approaches to design.

Understanding the difference can help you narrow down your style, communicate your ideas more clearly, and create a home that feels true to your personality.

What Is Modern Design?

Modern design refers to a specific design movement that emerged during the early to mid-20th century. Influenced by the modern art movement, it introduced a simpler, more functional approach to architecture and interior design. This era produced many iconic furniture pieces that are still recognized today, including the Eames Chair and the Egg Chair.

The style is known for clean lines, simple geometric shapes, minimal ornamentation, and an emphasis on function. Materials such as wood, metal, and glass are commonly used, creating spaces that feel open, organized, and timeless. Every piece has a purpose, and unnecessary decoration is kept to a minimum.

What Is Contemporary Design?

Unlike modern design, contemporary design isn't tied to one period in history. Instead, it reflects the styles and trends that are popular today.

Contemporary interiors often borrow ideas from several design styles, including modern, minimalist, and Art Deco design. You'll commonly see clean lines, neutral color palettes, natural materials, layered textures, and a balance between comfort and simplicity.

One of the defining characteristics of contemporary design is that it continues to evolve. As trends change, so does contemporary design.

"Contemporary design is always in flux," says Donna Farley, Head Designer at JMC Design Build Remodel. Over the past five years, Donna has helped design countless remodeling projects across North Jersey. Her work has been recognized with industry awards and featured in magazines, giving her a unique perspective on today's most popular design styles.

What Do Modern and Contemporary Design Have in Common?

It's easy to see why homeowners often confuse these two styles because they share many of the same design principles.

Both modern and contemporary homes favor clean, uncluttered spaces that feel bright and functional. They often feature open floor plans, large windows, and furniture with exposed legs that helps rooms feel more open.

Natural materials such as wood, metal, and glass are commonly used in both styles, and neutral color palettes remain popular choices. Each style also focuses on simplicity rather than filling a room with decorative accessories.

What Makes Them Different?

Although modern and contemporary design share many similarities, they have a few key differences.

Modern design follows a more defined style that has remained consistent over time. It emphasizes clean, straight lines, simple geometric shapes, functional furniture, and minimal decoration. Because it is based on a specific design movement, its overall look has stayed largely the same for decades.

Contemporary design is more flexible and reflects what's popular today. It often blends influences from several design styles while incorporating current materials, colors, textures, and finishes. Soft curves, layered textures, and natural materials are common features, and the style continues to evolve as trends change.

Can You Mix Modern and Contemporary Design?

Absolutely.

Many homeowners discover they like features from both styles, and combining them often creates a home that feels balanced and personal.

Donna says she doesn't ask homeowners to choose between modern and contemporary right away. Instead, she first looks at the home's existing architecture, furnishings, and overall character.

"I take a look at their home and the rest of their furnishings to see what would fit best with the rest of the house," Donna says. "I also incorporate their opinion because they're the ones living there. Sometimes we use a mix of both, and there's nothing wrong with that."

Rather than trying to fit every remodel into one design category, the goal is to create a space that feels cohesive and reflects the homeowner's lifestyle.

Final Thoughts

Modern and contemporary design have more in common than they do differences, which is why they're so often confused. Both embrace simplicity, clean lines, and thoughtful design, but modern is rooted in a specific period of history while contemporary reflects the trends of today.

As Donna points out, choosing a design style isn't about following strict rules. It's about finding what fits your home, your furnishings, and your personal taste. Sometimes that's modern. Sometimes it's contemporary. And often, it's a combination of both that creates a home you'll enjoy for years to come.
